ADEQUATE YEARLY PROGRESS (AYP)

AYP. 

Under the accountability provisions in the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, all public school campuses, school districts, and the state are evaluated for Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). Districts, campuses, and the state are required to meet AYP criteria on three measures: 

  • Reading/Language Arts
  • Mathematics
  • Graduation Rate (for high schools and districts) or Attendance Rate (for elementary and middle/junior high schools)

The federal definition of a "Highly Qualified" teacher is one who is" fully certified and /or licensed by the state; holds at least a bachelor's degree from a four-year institution; and demonstrates competence in each core academic subject area in which the teacher teaches. Those areas include: 

  • English
  • Reading
  • Language Arts
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Foreign Languages
  • Civics and Government
  • Social Studies
  • Economics
  • Arts
  • History
  • Geography
  • Kindergarten through Grade 6 (K-6)
